Amezri: discover the High Atlas through the Tessaout Valley

A mountain journey from the Ouarzazate region into the Tessaout Valley, with village landscapes, thoughtful walking and time for local hospitality.

Amezri introduces a different side of the wider Ouarzazate region. Here, the journey turns towards the High Atlas and the Tessaout Valley, also written Tassaout. Mountain slopes, river corridors and inhabited villages replace the city’s broad streets and cinema sets. The attraction is the relationship between landscape and everyday life: places to walk, people to learn from and a pace that encourages you to stay longer.

Where is Amezri?

Amezri is a High Atlas village in the Tessaout Valley, within Ouarzazate Province. It belongs to a mountain setting, so planning a visit requires more thought than choosing a stop along the main city sightseeing route. Begin with our Amezri destination guide, then discuss the actual approach and your proposed walking with a local driver or mountain guide. A short distance on a map does not establish an easy journey.

What makes the valley worth exploring

Make the landscape the centre of your visit. Look at how paths connect settlements and how cultivated ground fits into the valley floor. Stop where your guide can explain what you are seeing rather than treating every village as a photographic backdrop. A short, well-chosen walk can reveal more than a demanding route taken simply to cover ground.

For a first visit, choose a village walk or an accessible valley section agreed with your guide. Tell them how comfortable you are on uneven paths, how much ascent you want and whether children are travelling. Keep a longer mountain route as a separate decision, with its own preparation, timing and equipment.

Amezri and Ichbaken: build a realistic itinerary

Ichbaken offers another reason to explore the wider Tessaout area. Combining villages can make a rewarding journey when the route allows time for walking, meals and conversation. Ask which connections suit your transport and the conditions on your dates. Avoid assuming that a full mountain circuit can be fitted comfortably between departure and dinner in Ouarzazate.

An overnight stay may be a better option if the journey would otherwise dominate the day. Confirm the accommodation itself, room arrangements, meals and arrival time. A village name in an itinerary is not a confirmed bed, and a scenic photograph does not show the current condition of an approach road.

Respect the village and its working landscape

Ask before photographing residents or entering private courtyards. Keep to the route your host or guide recommends and leave cultivated plots and water channels undisturbed. If a meal or demonstration is arranged, agree the price and timing beforehand. Local hospitality is most enjoyable when both visitor and host understand the arrangement.

Before travelling from Ouarzazate

  • Confirm the route, vehicle suitability and return plan with a local professional.
  • Check conditions for the mountain destination, not only the city forecast.
  • Agree walking duration, ascent and rest stops.
  • Carry suitable footwear, layers, water and the supplies your guide recommends.
  • Confirm accommodation and meals separately if staying overnight.

Is Amezri a simple city excursion?

Treat it as a mountain journey. The appropriate route and time required depend on the approach, road conditions and activities you choose.
